The single biggest difference between a rug that looks styled and one that looks like an afterthought is whether it was chosen for the room it's going into, rather than just "a rug." Here's how we'd approach each of the main rooms.
Living room

Bedroom
Placement matters more than size here. A rug that extends out from both sides and the foot of the bed, so your feet land on it getting in and out, does more for comfort than one centred purely for symmetry. Our bedroom rug range leans into softer, deeper piles that suit this use.
Dining room
Go bigger than instinct suggests: the rug needs to stay under all four chair legs even when they're pulled out from the table, which typically means 60–70cm of rug extending beyond the table's edge on every side. Kitchen
Smaller, targeted pieces — in front of a sink or stove — rather than one large rug, are the norm, largely for practicality: they're easier to lift out and wash or shake off.
Our take
The room-by-room approach sounds obvious once it's spelled out, but the majority of rug purchases we see (and, we'll admit, more than a few of our own early ones) start with "I like this rug" rather than "this room needs a rug that does X." Reverse that order and the result looks considerably more intentional for the same spend.
