"Area rug" is really just the industry term for any rug meant to define a zone within a room, rather than cover wall-to-wall like carpet — a lounge rug under a coffee table, a round rug anchoring a reading nook, a runner down a hallway. If you're searching for where to buy one online, the category matters more than the label.
Rectangular area rugs for living and dining spaces
The most common shape, sized to sit under the front legs of a sofa or fully under a dining table plus pushed-back chairs. This is where most sizing mistakes happen — measure before you shop.
Round area rugs
Increasingly popular for breakfast nooks, reading corners and under round dining tables. Our round rug range spans small accent sizes through to large statement pieces, and because they're symmetrical, they're one of the more forgiving shapes to get right without a floor plan.
Runners
Long, narrow area rugs for hallways and entryways — technically still "area rugs" by definition, even though they rarely come up when people picture the term.
Where to actually buy them
You'll find area rugs across marketplaces, department stores, and specialists. A dedicated rug retailer's advantage for this category specifically is depth of sizing — our full range is filterable down to exact centimetre dimensions, which matters far more for an area rug (which has to fit a defined space, unlike carpet) than it does for most other homewares. We cover the broader buying process, including what to check before checkout, in our step-by-step guide to buying rugs online.
A material note worth knowing
Many area rugs marketed as "wool" are wool-blend rather than pure wool, which affects both price and how the rug should be cleaned. Woolmark's wool care guide is a genuinely useful reference regardless of where you buy, and it's worth checking a product's fibre content against it before you commit to a rug you plan to keep for years.
